We set the sails at 0800 and sailed out of the anchorage at Ille Fourche. Underway, the students honed their navigation skills with a practical exercise in which they fixed our position using traditional methods, and measured the ship’s speed by timing how long a piece of bread took to float by. The wind was light and the seas calm, so after lunch we hove to for a swim call. Everyone enjoyed diving into the seemingly eternal depths. By 1600 we were anchored in Orangstadt Bay on the Dutch Island of St. Eustatia. Following dinner a lecture on Marine Biology will be held.
