Baby turtles and shark wrestling

Oct 3, 2008

Location: : Charlestown, Nevis
Author: Jessica Fry (Beaker)
This morning after breakfast we were dropped off at Pinneys Beach to meet Barry for another fun day on Nevis. We drove over to Oualie Beach to meet Barbara Whitman, a marine biologist on Nevis. She chatted with us about the different invertebrate phylum and told us some cool stories and interesting facts about many species. After this we went over to her touch tank lab “Under the Sea”. Here we were able to understand the different organisms first hand, as we held and observed many different marine organisms. These included, cushion sea stars, urchins, conchs and many more. Barb also rears baby sea turtles that need a little help, e.g. they get trampled at the bottom of the nest and left behind. At the moment she has 3 baby sea turtles, 3 weeks old, and asked us to name one for her – we named him Franklin. Unfortunately, overnight Barb’s reef shark had died, a shark carcass obviously then made a perfect opportunity for a photo shoot. After this we had lunch at the hotel restaurant and then relaxed on the beach for a while, before heading back to Ocean Star. Back on board we had a marine biology class, impressing me with their knowledge already. After that is was shower time and dinner, finishing off the day with a sailing class on knots.andlt;hr width=’100’/andgt;andlt;div align=’center’andgt;andlt;tableandgt;andlt;trandgt;andlt;tdandgt;andlt;
