Lifestyles of the Rich and Tanned

Location: St. Barths
Author: Beth
We started the day with a thorough BA to give Ocean Star a bit of polish in glitzy St Barths. We motored in the rain into the town of Gustavia, through a bay full of yacht moorings. From a distance the town looks very low-key and similar to the ones we visited in The Saints; small white tropical cottages built up the hill, with old wooden doors and shutters and topped with red roofs. When we got closer, however, we found that nearly every one of those quaint buildings housed high-end luxury stores like Yves St Laurent, Cartier, and Prada. It being Sunday, most were closed, but we were able to find a few restaurants open for lunch, and many shipmates loaded up on baguettes and French cheeses. andlt;br /andgt;Back on Ocean Star, a group of shipmates went diving at Gros Islets, a group of small rocky islets that sit at the mouth of the harbor right next to where we’ve anchored. We saw Nassau Grouper and several students were startled by a huge black jack that swam by them, looking for food in the shallows. Tonight we’re watching “Making the Call” a video about surfing the extreme big waves (60-80 feet) off Hawaii and California, and looking forward to our own much smaller scale surfing excursion tomorrow morning. andlt;br /andgt;
