The Squeeze

Location: Rodney Bay, St. Lucia

Every night before dinner, we participate in an old Sea|Mester tradition called “squeeze.” We sit around the dinner table, as the sun fades away in the background and join hands. The skipper of the day then poses a question, which ranges from funny (What kind of superhero power would you like to possess?) to the more serious (What changes have you seen in yourself while aboard Ocean Star?). The skipper of the day answers the question they posed, then passes it around the table by squeezing the next person’s hand until each shipmate answers the question. From my very first day aboard, I have found this to be the favorite part of my day, as everyone comes together as our Ocean Star family, and shares a personal piece about them. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get to know my shipmates better. Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we support each other. But every time, we leave the dinner table with just a little more information about the person sitting beside us, and come together more as a group because of it. Tonight we shared our favorite quotes/mantras to live by. Quotes reflected the personalities of the shipmates, and showed that we all shared the same passionate approach to life choosing to “not sweat the small stuff” and “live each day to the fullest.” I would like to end my blog with the quote I shared tonight, which I believe relates to each of us aboard. Though our reasons for coming aboard Ocean Star vary, we all made the amazing choice to travel and live 80 days on a boat in the Caribbean:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do then the things you did do, so throw off the bowline, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain
