If Only I Could Speak French

Oct 27, 2009

Location: St. Pierre, Martinique
Author: Katie K.
I proudly woke everyone up promptly at about 0710. It was a bit of a slow morning but quickly picked up its pace. I awoke to the smell of Eric and Casey making coffee cake for breakfast. Might I say it was quite delicious considering we also had it with dinner. We ended up leaving Martinique around 8 and motored to St. Pierre which only took about an hour and a half. We ended up having Marine Biology underway so it seemed to go by quicker. Almost right after we got done with class everyone got there rain gear on and headed up on deck since it was a drizzling a tad. We anchored and got ready to go on shore. St Pierre was definitely not as nice as Fort De France but Matt, Arielle, and I ended up seeing a lot of awesome sights. On May 8, 1902 Mount Pelee erupted which is now the active volcano on the island. There were still some buildings around, or what were left of them that we got to see and stumble through. We ended shore time by passing by a park and walking through the cemetery which was very different from the kind we have back home. Instead of people in individual coffins there were families in one, with their pictures sitting on top. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the culture and what it had to offer.
