Today was a wonderful day in the little island paradise of St Barthelemy. Donning our rash guards and loads of sunscreen, we headed over to a beautiful, remote beach were we rented some surfboards. After a brief Oceanography lesson on the beach about wave dynamics and determining wave sets, shipmates tried their luck at surfing the waves. Most of the morning was spent simply getting used to the boards, and avoiding being hit by them after wiping out. However, as the waves built and became more gnarly, shipmates started to look like real surfer dudes and dudettes. We had delicious fresh jambon et fromage baguettes (ham and cheese sandwiches) which we picnicked on in between bodacious wave sets.
After a day full of sun, sand and surfing, we returned to Ocean Star to change out of our beach baggies and bikinis to nicer clothes for a well-deserved dinner out at Le Select. Le Select is a small burger joint that became famous after Jimmy Buffett wrote the song, “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” about Le Select’s “big warm bun and a huge chunk of meat heaven on earth with an onion slice.” Some ate with lettuce and tomato, Heinz-57, and all with French fried potatoes. After a fantastic day, we were stuffed, but happy. As his song says, it was “making the best of every virtue and vice; worth every bit of sacrifice!”
(And a Happy birthday shout out to my big brother, Matt, who has always been my surfing buddy)
