Land Ho!

Feb 3, 2010

Location: St. Helena, UK, Atlantic Ocean
Author: Annie Rae
Land Ho! These words were yelled across Argo’s deck this morning. It had been 11 days since we had last seen land and everyone was anxious and excited to better glimpse one of the most remote islands on our planet. For the first time since leaving Cape Town, we took down and flaked all the sails and learned how to drop anchor. St. Helena is certainly the most unique island most of the crew has ever seen; less than ten miles long this volcanic landscape is home to roughly 5000 people. After dinner the crew and students completed our first “boat appreciated” during which we scrubbed Argo’s deck, and down below until she shone. Tonight will be our first night of anchor watches and tomorrow we will head ashore to explore St. Helena and all the island has to offer.
