Location: Tobago Cays
Today we woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the tranquil Palm Island. After a quick motor to Union Island, we anchored and headed to shore. I took a team of shipmates provisioning to give them an idea of what grocery shopping is like in a small island at the local markets. We searched through the meat freezers, looking for anything other than chicken feet, pig snouts or gizzards (thankfully, we found turkey legs, pork chops and hot dogs). We depleted the fresh bread shelf, marveled at the interesting flavors of yogurt (ginger?!) and were happy to find cheese in the cooler; (last year, a shopkeeper sent her daughter home to run and grab their personal supply of cheese!). We then worked our way through the produce markets, purchasing local goods from each stand and headed home with our bounty of fresh mangoes, watermelon, grapefruits and oranges, along with some new vegetables to try, including Calaloo, the staple on most islands; (it resembles a mix between spinach and kale). Then, with much anticipation, we headed to the Tobago Cays, a post-card perfect set of uninhabited islands. Waiting for us are clear waters, white sandy beaches, grazing sea turtles, excellent snorkeling and a place to play with wind toys or to simply relax and soak up the tranquility of it all. To sum it up, Tobago Cays is paradise.
