Winding Down

Mar 27, 2010

Location: Great Harbour, Peter Island
Author: Jennifer Webber
This morning we said goodbye to Gorda Sound and headed to the classic wreck dive on Salt Island, the RMS Rhone. The Royal Mail Steamer Rhone was a 310-foot cargo ship that was pushed onto the rocks of Salt Island during a hurricane in 1887. It has two nice swim-throughs where we spotted many large barracudas and groupers looming in the shadows. We even found the “lucky porthole,” its shiny brass clearly showing through the wreckage, and rubbed it for good luck (as a side effect, it remains polished). We then had a hot and sunny motor back to Great Harbour, Peter Island, where we tied off to Ocean Star’s mooring line and jumped into the deep, refreshing water to cool off. To top off a perfect day in the BVI’s, we enjoyed our last grill night aboard.
