Our Last Hoorah!

Aug 12, 2010

Location: Norman Island
Author: Erin
Today started like any other day here on Ocean Star. We had a fabulous breakfast of French Toasted and even had Travis the director of Sea|Mester grace us with his presence. After breakfast we had our Oceanography research project presentations. My group did our project about the pesky fire coral that is all over the islands. One group observed the fish that hung around our boat and the other group worked on the boats remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Needless to say we were all relieved to be done with our school work. Before lunch we motored from Peter Island to Norman Island. It is said that this is the island where Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island is based. We even have Skull Rock off our starboard bow. With the hope of finding buried treasure we all eagerly jumped in Irv and Exy and head towards the island. Snorkel gear on we swam through the caves keeping our eyes out for something shiny. Unfortunately we were not so lucky, but I bet if we brought a few shovels and dug a few holes we might have found something. I mean who doesn’t get excited at the thought of finding the treasure of pirates who inhabited these islands so long ago. The BVI was a favorite hang out of theirs. After coming up empty handed we begrudgingly headed back to the boat to clean dive gear and pack up our suitcases. Its hard to believe that our trip is almost over. With only one day left on our beloved Ocean Star, I reminisce all the good times shes given us and how she has kept us safe on our journey. This is trip is something I’ll never forget and I think I speak for the rest of the crew when I say that. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I get home and don’t have to fight current or jellyfish to take a shower, or scoop up seawater to wash my dishes. Ocean Star and her crew have found a special place in my heart, I’m surely going to miss my sea family.
