Location: Underway to St. Lucia
Today marked our first full day underway on the beginning of our longest passage yet, west across the Atlantic Ocean. Partly cloudy skies, a light following breeze and seas welcomed us today. We began the morning under sail power alone, but as the winds tapered off we started up the D-sail (that’s shorthand for the diesel engine) for the rest of the day. Good news is that this gave us an opportunity to complete a couple necessary sail repairs in the meantime. We have also started taking daily sun sights to calculate our position, which several crew are very excited to learn about. In other news, everyone is adjusting to new watch team rosters, trying to remember who to wake up for the next watch (along with a few debates about how to mesh the somewhat different systems of the old teams). But as Hilary put it, as the same watch team now, we should unite rather than remain divided. In the end, I think this will be a good opportunity for the crew to get to know one another better as we stand watch together into the wee hours of the night. We are a united crew here to accomplish the journey together, which is a pretty sweet thang when you think about it. P.S. Happy, happy birthday to Leah today!!
