10 Days Left of Seamester

Dec 6, 2012

Location: Underway to Antigua
Author: Staige Davis
Day 80 10 days left of Seamester. How time flies when you’re having the time of your life, What a voyage! Woke up to a glassy sea for the 8 a.m. to noon watch. Another day without a breath of wind! The crew is starting to get a bit antsy, sitting here without anyway to move. It’s very frustrating feeling helpless to elements outside of our control. On the plus side, the Caribbean sun is giving us all phenomenal tans! After lunch we had a presentation by Faloon on the marine life we hope to see on the reefs of Antigua. Then we took the Oceanography final exam, which was quite difficult. For the rest of the afternoon, some of us studied for the upcoming Navigation exams and finished up assignments that are due soon, while others relaxed, reading books and finding ways to pass the time. For a squeeze question I asked the crew if they could have anything on the boat to pass the time, what would it be. Answers varied from musical instruments, to dogs. After squeeze we took a minute of silence to pray to whatever wind god we desired. While we learned in oceanography that wind is the movement of air from high pressure to low pressure, sitting in the doldrums will for a couple days will make anyone superstitious. Hopefully our prayers will be answered soon, I miss the feeling of the wind in my mustache!
