Welcome Students!
Location: Sopers Holle, BVI
Hello friends and family! Welcome to the Vela blog! It can be a bit difficult to stay in touch while we cross oceans, but thanks to this blog, you’ll be able to get a little glimpse into our lives on board every day!
I can happily report that all of our students have made it safely onboard Vela. We spent most of the day getting to know one another by chatting, playing some chess, and just hanging out with the people we were about to embark with on this incredible journey. Everyone got a full tour of the boat and settled into their bunks. As a former student myself, I can empathize with the students in that it can take a bit of getting used to life on board the boat. Small bunks and shared cabins are definitely something most of us aren’t used to in our everyday lives, but they end up creating some of the best friendships and memories.
Our head chef today was Mich! She and her two sous chefs – Runyan and Joey – made us some yummy pizza to enjoy as our first meal together. Safe to say everyone was hungry after some big travel days. After dinner, the students got a quick rundown of some of our basic rules on board as well as doing our first squeeze of the program! For those of you who don’t know, squeeze happens every night after dinner, where the skipper of the day chooses a question to ask the group. We then go around in a circle and each answer the question as well as share our appreciation of the day. Today, our skipper was our captain, Tom. The question was, “What motivated you and made you choose this trip?” After the squeeze, everyone got to have their first go at their jobs on the job wheel.
And that wraps up day one! It’s amazing to have all of these amazing students on board, Vela. I can speak for myself and all the staff when I say that we are incredibly eager and excited to sail across the Atlantic with this group.
Thanks for tuning in. Come back tomorrow to see what crazy adventures we have, then!
