Marine Science Instructor, Deckhand
Growing up on an estuary in Devon, UK, Jen had the fortune of learning to sail in wooden gaff-rigged schooners & ketches; adventuring along the English & French coasts, she quickly found that she preferred being in or on the water to being on land. Her adventures have taken her to the Mediterranean and US East Coast, where she has dabbled in racing and crewing on classic yachts. In addition to this, Jen loves camping, diving and white-water rafting, and following six months in France pursuing her enthusiasm for food as a semi-professional cook, she found a passion for skiing too. During two summers in Upstate New York running a summer school sailing program, she discovered her love of teaching. Through her Master’s degree in Global Sustainability Solutions at the University of Exeter, Jen developed a deeper understanding of the threats facing our world, particularly marine life. This led her to research eective monitoring techniques for plastic accumulation on remote shores of the Galapagos Islands for her thesis. As a result, she wants to inspire aspiring marine scientists and sailors to protect our rich, diverse ocean-based ecosystems. Most recently, Jen joins us from the conservation sector, having worked with Galapagos Conservation Trust for the past three years, and cannot wait to bring her passion for wildlife and the oceans to the students at Sea|mester!
