Jaime began her sailing journey as a hobby, which became a full-time profession in 2022 when she decided to change careers and pursue a life at sea as a sailor. Since then, she has focused on long-distance offshore sailing and tourism-focused skipper roles, where she enjoys introducing others to the beauty of sailing throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean.
Jaime has sailed over 30,000 nautical miles — including five Atlantic crossings, numerous Mediterranean navigations, and island hopping around the Caribbean, from Florida to the Grenadines. She holds an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean certification and a USCG 100-ton Master license. She is trained to navigate by traditional techniques, including celestial navigation for ocean passages.
Before her sailing career, Jaime focused on academia, earning her BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. She worked in both the Aerospace and Maritime Engineering industries before transitioning to full-time sailing. She is excited to blend her sailing experience with her academic background to bring a unique insight to her role as a Seamester instructor.
Outside of sailing, Jaime enjoys long-distance hiking. Among other trails, she has hiked the full length of New Zealands South Island on the Te Araroa Trail.
