Fabulous Faffing Friday
Location: Mauritius
Hello, dear readers! It’s day 3 of being in Mauritius and we are still basking in the bliss of doing chores on a still boat, taking hot showers in the shore heads, and eating fresh fruit to our hearts’ content (thank you Emma!) Today had the most glorious beginning as Scarlette made cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting (!!!!), they were incredible! After the cleanup, we went right into classes. We had a review class with Perry for our upcoming marine bio exam, and then puzzled our way through nav master with Riley. I’m not joking when I say that I literally have to put every ounce of focus into that class; charting is seriously hard, but once you figure it out, it is so rewarding! It also makes me feel like a pirate or something adjacent, which is a bonus. Once we were done with classes and lunch, it was shore time for a full 4 1/2 hours! Scarlette, Henry, Thaxton, and I set off for the local market and garment district. It was inside a large two-story warehouse and smelled incredible— there were so many stalls piled high with spices, fresh herbs, every type of tropical fruit and vegetable you could imagine, and some of the largest carrots I’ve ever seen. Scarlette got some giant green grapes, which were the perfect ratio of juicy, crunchy, and tart. After we were done in the market, we wandered around the nearby area for quite a while, just drinking in the architecture and sights to see. We passed so many beautiful white mosques, which were juxtaposed by tall granite banks and mid-1800s-esque stonework shophouses. We finally made it to a real supermarket, which was chaotic and overwhelming but also magical, as I got to finally eat citrus Greek yogurt, which I’ve been craving since day 6 of passage! Zeke, Fin, Payton, Adda, and Vera did their own exploring and found a super cool fort! Someone sent a very funny video of Payton disappearing into a turret (?) to the group chat, which was appreciated. We all reconvened on Vela for dinner, which was Scarlette’s rendition of orange chicken (DELICIOUS). There was also a beautiful double rainbow right before we ate!
As I’m writing this, everyone is practicing calisthenics moves in the middle of the salon, which is great entertainment. Tonight we are prepping our dive gear for tomorrow morning, and are looking forward to sailing Hobies too!! Such an exciting day tomorrow!
Greetings and love to mi familia <3 :)
Henry’s words of wisdom today are “don’t punch a gift horse in its mouth.” I didn’t get context, so neither do you all!
