First Storm
Location: Underway to Mauritius
Today was quite an eventful day on passage. The morning 8-12 watch, which I was on, was very exciting due to the weather we had. For most of the second half of the watch, it got quite stormy and was raining super hard; this was the first serious rain that we have had. We had a great time with the new weather and were really feeling like sailors, especially because both of the staff members on our watch were gone dealing with cooking and bilge pumping for the majority of the time. We ate quesadillas for lunch and went straight into seamanship followed by marine bio. We spent lots of marine bio laughing at photos, and then we had some nice chill time before dinner. During this time we heeled fully over to 40 degrees, sending lots of people and things flying. In the galley during this split second, JD flew into Nat, who was bracing herself against the sink, adding some more chaos to the day. Now that we all have an idea of what that feels like and does to Argo, I’m not sure we’re as eager to see it happen again. It just started raining again after dinner, so cleanup so far is very eventful, with some big rolls and lots of rain. Hopefully things chill out a bit, and we can have time to get things sorted after this chaotic day.
It is pretty crazy to think that we are almost halfway through the program already. Knowing that the last time I was skipper was around day 10, and the next time I’ll be skipper will be near the end of our voyage, is insane. We have been talking about how fast it has been going by, and I’m sure that before we know it, we will be in Cape Town, which is both exciting and a little sad to think about.
