Not on the Highway

Location: Underway to Mauritius

Day 43 marks our fifth day on passage to Mauritius! The crew of Argo woke up to another gorgeous day of sailing across the Indian Ocean with blue skies and amazing wind speeds. Watch team one had quite an eventful night as a storm hit and poured down on us while August, Riley, and I took down the flying jib sail on the bowsprit among pretty rough waves at midnight, which brought many laughs and lots of excitement. Everyone suited up in their foulies and looked absolutely ridiculous (especially Capri, who practically disappeared into hers). Despite the slight storm last night, today was absolutely gorgeous. We started the morning getting sewing lessons from Captain Shane to repair the flying jib, which had a slight tear in it, and Capri, Kares, and I spent our morning watch attempting to sew into five layers of thick sail fabric. As the assigned skipper of the day, I woke up the rest of the boat with Capri singing good morning songs up and down the cabins until the rest of the crew were up and slightly upset about their wake-ups. While waiting for lunch, we studied for our seamanship test in the cockpit, which turned more into would-you-rather questions and lots of jokes. As lunch was very prolonged due to the large amount of fries being cooked, we jumped into a marine bio lecture led by Jen, which is always very eventful and intriguing. After class, we took the seamanship test, which hopefully went well, and then jumped straight into free time and dinner. We ended off the day with a gorgeous sunset, Dylan and Shane playing the guitar while some of us sang, and some excitement as I took the helm and got us off course impressively quickly (oops). Overall, we are all having an amazing time on passage and settling in quite well with only 1,500 more miles to go! We’ve been celebrating many birthdays (shoutout to Banks and Rachel) with lots of cake, as I have appointed myself as the baker of the boat, and we are excited for the rest of the journey and many more exciting days to come!
Also, Mom, Dad, and Nana, August and I are thinking of you guys every day and miss you so very much. Give Bosun and Fergus a huge hug for me. Love you guys to the moon and back!
