St Helena Island Tour

Location: Saint Helena

We got an early start today at 7:00 am, and all gathered in the cockpit for our first breakfast together since passage. Hannah baked a delicious cappuccino muffin and pesto pasta to be packed away for lunch. After breakfast, we cleaned up, packed up, and boarded Tia and Angkarn, our dinghies to get us from the anchored Vela to shore.

We boarded our van for the day and started our tour of St Helena. Our driver drove off through downtown, pointing out key buildings and stores along the way. After checking out a few viewpoints, we arrived at Napoleon’s grave. It started with a lush, green mossy path down to an outlook of the gated stone grave, surrounded by bright flowers.

After a short drive up the mountain, we arrived at Napoleon’s house, where he was exiled for many years. It was massive, consisting of many rooms filled with historical handwriting, floor plans of the house, and drawings of him and the ship he arrived on. After walking through the house, we sat at a picnic table out front to eat lunch.

On the way back to the shore, we stopped several times to check out some donkeys, cows, and the oldest living resident on earth: Johnathan the tortoise. We also climbed up an old fort at the top of the island.
Then, we spent the rest of our shore time checking out stores and cafes, and sitting at Anne’s Place, using their wifi to call our parents. Back on Vela, dinner was chicken, beans, and rice bowls. We’re all looking forward to hopefully swimming with whale sharks tomorrow!
