Location: Portsmouth, Dominica

Hello everybody! Today was yet another exciting adventure aboard Ocean Star. Today started with a couple research project groups getting some science work in before breakfast, where one group found a cool microscopic crab looking thing (see pictures). After breakfast, we set out to shore to drive across the island to visit and learn more about the Kalinago people. The Kalinago are descendants of some of the earliest inhabitants of Dominica, and had full reign of the island until Columbus and the Europeans came along. Now they are concentrated in the northeast of the island, with only around 3000 people left living here. After arriving at their territory, we met our wonderful tour guide who shared all of his vast knowledge about his people. He showed us how they came to inhabit Dominica, including the boats they used and how they made them. He also took us around their territory and pointed out all the various plants, herbs, and spices that they use. These ranged from common ones like cinnamon and cilantro, to plants that none of us had ever heard of that had amazing healing and antioxidant properties, as well as plants that could freshen clothes and do a better job at whitening than bleach could! Overall, it was awesome to see how the Kalinago are able to live off the land that they are provided and understand how they all live very different yet fulfilling lives. Our tour guide was also super funny and cheerful which made the whole experience even better. Once we got back to Ocean Star, we embarked up the coast until we anchored here in Portsmouth. During the short passage, we gave the deck and some of the galley a deep clean to get the ship looking and smelling really nice. Then came dinner where chef Ella blessed us all with nutella and banana pizza for dessert, which was a very welcome treat. That was all for today, I hope all reading this are doing well!!
