Watch team 1 started the day off bright and early with the 12-4 am watch. After a 20-minute hatch period, Charlie and Philip jumped right into telling us some tough riddles. With little caffeine present on deck, we all took turns making tea to help get our brains ready to solve these riddles. The four hours passed quickly, with our brains working hard to wrap our heads around what we could bring through the green glass door or to the umbrella party. As watch wound down and it was time to hand the helm over to watch team two we were all riddled out and ready for some more sleep. We awoke to a sunny day and some delicious smells coming from the galley. Travis was cooking up a storm with his sous chefs, Kylie and Ben. Ben even whipped up some of his famous bread to go along with our BLTs. After lunch, it was time for oceanography with Will, where the crew learned about how whales use SOFAR channels to communicate. Then it was time for seamanship, and it was movie time to watch what some of our future sailings may look like as we get to South Africa. With the rest of the afternoon free, many took the time to study for seamanship or to catch up on some fun reading on the bow. We have had amazing weather and some beautiful wind these last few days, so hanging out on deck and enjoying an afternoon of sailing have become common occurrences. The evening wound down with a dinner consisting of kung pow chicken and learning about everyone’s favorite book/book series. Some popular books were the Percy Jackson series, slaughter house 5, and where the craw dads sing,. As we are wrapping up cleanup, it is almost time for my watch again, and we are sure to hear Philip’s famous line “Cocos by Tonight,” which is almost true as we are only about 25 nm from the island now.
