Location: Underway to Cape Cod
Hi, my name is Noah, and I was today’s skipper. We, as a boat, had tons of firsts today. It was definitely a busy day, what with leaving the dock the day after all of us new people arrived, but we were all optimistic about the passage to come and couldn’t wait to get out onto the open water. Due to the somewhat quick turnaround, we had to get through a lot of safety chats and policies during the morning so we would be ready and knowledgeable enough to help sail Vela for this short passage up to Boston. It got surprisingly chilly on our way out of the channel due to the consistent breeze and lack of land, but we were all busy with learning about our duties on watch to keep people safe, and all of our indispensable personal safety equipment. In fact, we even had a race to see who could put on their immersion “Gumby” suit the fastest, of which I am proud to admit myself as the victor. In more exciting news, we got to hoist two of vela’s sails to help boost us along toward our next port of call, seeing them up for the first time was definitely a few of our sailors’ highlight of the day. As I write this, our watch schedule begins, and with it our rotating sleep schedules and our first adaptations to the constant movement of being underway. Tomorrow, we join a parade of tall ships into Boston, where we will help celebrate America’s Sail250 event! Which I’m sure you will hear all about in tomorrow’s blog.
