Hello everyone, my name is Perry, and I am the oceanography instructor on board! I dive a little as well, but you can always find me on watch team 3!
Speaking of watch teams, today we left Guadeloupe; we had a nice quick breakfast of yogurt and granola before we prepared for passage. Passage prep usually includes attaching all halyards, removing sail covers, ratcheting dinghies, and running jib sheets. Standard stuff. It took us maybe an hour and a half, and we were off. Only problem is that leaving Guadeloupe is akin to navigating a minefield. So. Many. Lobster. Pots. We had to spin around a few times to get a good escape angle, but we managed. We got four sails up along our trip: the Main, Forsail, staysail, and Jib. We flew the 20nm to Dominica, hitting almost 9 knots of speed. We anchored with plenty of light left, had ocean showers, and had a nice dinner. Dinner was Gabes world-famous okonomiyaki (Japanese for thing you like in the pouring rain. It was awesome. Following dinner, a very nice man named Sheldon came over to our boat and offered us some fruit. We bought a few avocados and pineapples; tomorrows breakfast should be great. I was able to run through some oceanography lectures as well; todays lecture was about water, and it pairs great with our oceanography river boat cruise tomorrow morning!
