Well, today was a good one! Day 3 of passage started early for Watch Team One with the 4 to 8 AM watch. While a rocky watch was coming to an end, the captain decided it was time to raise the sails for the first time since the new 40-day crew arrived. Once watch team one was relieved and allowed to go back to bed, the captain decided it was time to go to full sail and raise the fisherman. After a while, the fisherman was lowered, and it was time for lunch! For lunch today, we had lentil soup with rice and bread, made by Sam, our head chef, Reese, and Tough, the sous chefs. After lunch, watch team one was back on for their 2-6 PM watch, and we shifted into classes where the 80-day crew had Marine Biology and the 40-day crew learned about the cards tradition of SEAMESTER. Cards are an important tradition where each student writes a kind, well-thought-out card to each person on the boat. These cards are meant to be an uplifting thing to read to oneself on a day when you may be feeling a bit down and just need a pick-me-up of kind words. After we covered the card tradition, the watch team one resumed their watch where a pod of dolphins, whose species looks like false killer whales, swam by us. At the tail end of watch for watch team one, we moved into dinner, which was a green Thai curry and rice prepared for us by our chefs. To finish off the day, we had a squeeze and the question was If you could go anywhere in the world without a budget constraint, where would you go?. As we finished the squeeze, we were greeted by the unexpected surprise of a fish on the line! Anda was the one to reel in the small Tuna, which Mac filleted! Today was a great day aboard Vela!
