Location: Port Denaru, Fiji
Today, we packed up our bags (we being the six of us staying at the Wyndham hotel who arrived early) and began our adventure seaward. I say packed up, but you need to understand the gravity of the situation: one of my bags weighed 58 pounds. One. Each of us had, on average, one bag weighing about that. So the amount of energy it takes to drag, hoist, stuff, and zip, drag to the taxi, and eventually sludge on the boat, is tremendous. By the time we reached Argo, we were all red in the face and sticky with sweat, which was a massive bummer because we wanted to take cute insta pics commemorating our arrival. Our disappointment was short-lived though, because soon we were swept up in the currents of meeting all the new faces of our companions for the next 40 or 80 days. We spent the rest of the day getting to know each other, watching the crew derig and rig the new sail (which none of us knew how to be any help whatsoever… it’s the thought that counts), and trying to escape the heat. A favorite part of today was sitting on deck talking to Alyssa about her experience going into Scientology as a prank and how weird cults are, which was so wonderfully off topic but what a great bonding experience. Maybe the only positive thing that ever came out of Scientology.
To cults and sailing,
Juliet
