Location: Underway to Sumbawa
This morning started with sunrise anchor watch at 4:30, with Siena docked off the coast on Lombok. We watched the sun rise over the mountains while talking about our pets (miss you, Beau!). Our only note on the anchor watch sheet was how we were both extremely startled by the fish that jumped off the stern. After being relieved, we had an amazing breakfast of baked oatmeal and fresh pineapple from Smash. We then talked about prepping and creating our own meals as our first student head chef starts in two days. Soon after, we started our journey to Sumbawa to arrive by six tomorrow morning. Our first-day watch began when students on watch team 1 were able to take the helm (some better than others) as we’re underway to Sumbawa for a quick 2-hour stop tomorrow.
After lunch, we finished the intros to our other three classes: Seamanship, Marine Biology, and Oceanography. Beyond thankful for the fans in the salon to keep some circulation below deck. We had a lot of free time this afternoon after classes while we were underway so most students continued to work on our first two leadership assignments. It was nice to have some downtime, but it felt weird not having a job or duty.
Tonight at dinner, after we all enjoyed naans as part of our meal, thanks to Jackson, the squeeze question I asked was, “What is one random certification, talent, or fact about yourself that you haven’t yet told anyone?” We got such a variety of answers, from being able to make knee farts and doing the Cotton Eye Joe and Macarena at the same time to a student having their avalanche/backcountry mountain training and another having a ukulele album on Spotify. It was so fun to hear the new random facts about the people we’ve been talking to 24/7 for the past six days. Tonight, we will continue with watch until our early 5 a.m. wake-up arriving in Sumbawa.
Love you, Mom and Dad!!
