Location: Nevis
I woke up this morning to the smell of French toast. When looking in the galley, I saw Noah and Hayden making breakfast for all 19 of us. We ate our breakfast with a view of beautiful Nevis. After clean up, we went straight into classes. We started with an oceanography lecture, followed by a quiz. After a quick break, we had a nav master lecture. Gabe’s advice for dealing with charts and life is “if you can see something, you are looking at it.”
After class, we quickly got ready for our outing, the Culturama Festival (specifically the aquatic extravaganza). We were dropped off at the beach that is in front of Ocean Star. After a quick walk to town, passing Alexander Hamilton’s house, we made it to the ferry dock. Since everything runs on island time, we were a bit early (we arrived at 12, the event was supposed to start at 10… oops) and we instead went to grab a snack and some cold drinks.
Once Culturama started, Cully and I signed up for the first wim race while Noah, Mo and Erik signed up to slide across a greased pole to try and win a chicken. After the first swim race, Macklyn and Eilidh signed up to do the second one. Erik won first place in the biggest splash diving competition while Aoife got second on the coolest dive with the least amount of splash. It was so much fun cheering each other on.
Honorable mention: this festival had the best lemonade stand.
We changed and walked over to Sunshine’s for dinner. There were these dogs at the restaurant that everyone was picking up and hugging (key detail for later in the log). We all ate really good meals and were picked up in the dinghy.
When we started to ocean shower, people started to mention they had fleas on them. This led to people scrubbing themselves twice as hard and flea checks with head lamps. What a crazy end to the day.
Tomorrow is the “treacherous hike” so stay tuned!
– disclaimer: the fleas are gone! Luckily, multiple washes with Dawn dish soap eliminated the problem. The fleas came from picking up the unfortunately very cute and cuddly dogs, not from a lack of hygiene.
