Location: Dominica
Its been a week! Today marks the official start of our mobilization. We set sail at about 11 this morning, leaving Antigua in high spirits, ready to get our hands on some rope. Everyone hopped right in and learned as we went, quite literally hands-on learning. We raised the anchor and the sails at a good pace as a team, learning various knots and working together to combine our strengths. Later, as we were fully underway, we attended Gabe and Ignacios lectures on Nautical Science and Oceanography, learning how the sail takes up wind and how sailing has evolved over time. And of course, a very special birthday shoutout to Gabe, our captain, who taught me and many others how to steer the boat today with exceptional patience and calm. Before dinner, we took turns steering, and Oli and Dom attempted to cast a fishing line from the stern, but unfortunately, they were unsuccessfulnext time. Today we were also placed into our watch teams- groups of 6 or so that take 4-hour shifts manning the boat and doing regulatory checks throughout the day and night! After dinner, everybody began their respective jobs, and the watch team remained hard at work. We are set to arrive in Dominica early tomorrow morning, and I am very much looking forward to my teams 4-8 am watch!!! Goodnight!
