Location: Civitavecchia, Italy
It’s a perfect day in Civitavecchia today. The sky is clear and the sun’s been shining all day. I woke everyone up at 7 am, and we watched what was left of the sunrise. We spent the morning learning safety practices for the boat. We learned how and when to use our PFDs and had a fire drill, as well as a gumby suit race that I failed miserably. We had some free time after lunch to explore the port city. Emily and I went to the grocery store to stock up on toothpaste and energy drinks after we exchanged our USD for Euros. Some other people from the boat went to play basketball or went to the beach. Then, when we got back to the boat, there were like 10 people gathered and doing pushups together. Still not sure what that’s about. After hanging out for a bit and then eating Rachel’s tofu fried rice for dinner (fantastic), we walked to get gelato in town as the sun set. After trying real Italian gelato, I can confidently say that Gelato Paradiso in Coronado is just as good, if not better.
Aside from that, we’ve all been using our time to get to know each other. I don’t think I’ve met a single person on the boat that I didn’t find fascinating. Everyone is so insanely cool, the exact type of people you’d expect to take a gap year and sail across the world. I miss my friends and my family, but I can’t wait to get to know every member of this crew and experience this crazy adventure together.
I love you, Mom, Dad, and Carter! (Bruno too!)
