Location: Komodo National Park
A long-awaited day for us on Vela. We have already been in Komodo for a few days, but we were able to visit Pulau Rinca (Rinca Island), which holds many interesting specieswater buffalo, deer, monkeys, wild horses, but most importantly, komodo dragons. We got to the park around 12, and began our three-hour hike through the park. Our tour guides were quite helpful, explaining the dragons life cycle, mating habits, and habitat. Making sure we kept a safe distance from the dragons at all times. The first half of our hike went through a more rocky, but shaded area. During that half we saw many dragons, monkeys, and water buffalo. Our halfway point was marked by a very fat dragon, which had just eaten and will not eat for another two weeks at least. We then walked through a very scenic, grassy savannah. Didnt see many animals, but we were able to enjoy the rolling hills, hundreds of palm trees, and a view of the island coast from above. At the end of our hike, we were able to purchase some cold drinks and souvenirs before dinghy-ing back to Vela for dinner. Besides the national park, we also celebrated Arden and Brookes birthdays, 20 and 27, which were quite special. Lots of cake and brownies were enjoyed after dinner. On a sadder note, it was our last day with Josh L, so for a squeeze, we all said happy birthday, Arden, happy birthday, Brooke, and farewell, Josh L.
