Location: North Atlantic
Hello, hello from the mid-Atlantic (30 degrees 56 min N, 61 degrees 21 min W), and happy July! To start off the day, each watch team experienced the most beautiful bioluminescence on last night’s watches. The ocean was aglow with dinoflagellates, and we had a full “snail-trail” behind us from our prop, creating the most spectacular stars in the sea (along with the amazing stars in the sky)! We then awoke this morning to absolute glass-like water that had us all comparing to mornings on a lake (shout out to my parents, who are probably experiencing similar conditions in the Adirondacks). With no wind or waves, our engine remained on throughout the day and allowed watches to practice their knot-tying skills and dance moves. WT 3, also known as the Burrrritos (from how cold we get), the Shooting Stars (from the vast number that we see), the Hot Tamales (from the few that don’t get cold), and the astronomically inclined (from all the constellations we know/makeup), had the 8 am-12 pm watch, WT1 had the 12 pm-2 pm, and WT 2 had the 2 pm-6 pm. The afternoon was filled with nav master practice with Carolyn and leadership class with Tom. Heather, our lovely head chef, made delicious tofu scramble for lunch and pizza bagels for dinner- true crowd-pleasers. Our dinner was accompanied by another incredible sunset on the Atlantic that we were lucky enough to see from all angles! Shout out to our helmsman, Jack, who definitely was totally paying attention to the course the whole time but thought we should all get a great view of the sun going down on the horizon; everyone loves a good donut on the water. To wrap up the day, my squeeze question was to tell us about a friend from home in one or two sentences. The answers were sweet, hilarious, and filled with very random facts about people we don’t know.
***Super special happy birthday to Heather’s grandmother, Ducky!!! We hope you had a lovely day ***
