After the long day yesterday, a nice rest was well-needed. We started the day off slow, waking up 30 minutes later than usual at 7:30 (still way too early, though), and had a very relaxed morning. After a nice breakfast, I tried to instruct the crew what to do to get the boat ready for passage, as is my job, but it was immediately clear that I didn’t know what half of the things on the checklist meant. Somehow, passage-prep went by extremely quickly (EDITORS NOTE: Griffin did a great job), and we geared up and dressed up for our next event of the day: Customs. As we sat waiting on the boat, changing from tank tops into shirts, or even just putting on shirts, we stressed ourselves out thinking about how long this might take: five hours? Ten hours? Two days? As the anticipation finally climaxed and the dinghy motored back to the boat with a few more people, an unnamed student (Lina) greeted them as if she were a hotel concierge, asking if she could take their shoes and even offering the lady who brought the officials to the boat a tour. Surprisingly, her hospitality must have worked because they only stayed onboard for about ten minutes before leaving. Who knew customs agents had a heart? After the relief that was customs, we had a nice lunch and then cleaned up. All the students mentally prepared themselves for Leadership Class, which featured a presentation by Jackson and me on “Understanding Yourself.” Fortunately for them, they were lucky enough to witness Jackson swinging on the companionway like a monkey while presenting. Somehow, our presentation seemed to be the highlight of a few people’s day despite Smash (our chief-mate) characterizing it as unconventional (she loved it). After our presentation, half the boat seemed to enter hibernation mode as a large group of students made their way to their bunks and napped.

Some people napped for 20 minutes, and others napped for three and a half hours, like me. As far as I know, the people who didn’t nap right away did some work or chilled for a little before realizing that taking a nap was definitely the right thing to do. Maybe some people didn’t nap at all. Who knows? After a nice nap in a sweaty room with three other guys, I woke up as dinner was finishing up and made some coffee for myself and two other people as I knew that I would not be able to stay awake otherwise. Dinner was Nasi Goreng, an amazing meal cooked by Tom (our captain), Nico, and Kasey. After we stuffed ourselves silly with food, we wrapped up with squeeze and then cleaned up. Today was definitely the break we all needed.

I love you, Mom, Dad, Riley, Spencer, and Abby
