Being out at sea, you get to a certain point where your sense of time fades away. Both the past and the future seem to fade from existence, and it doesn’t make a difference whether you’re four days out or forty. You’re surrounded by the same horizon, by the same infinite blue expanse, and that’s okay. There’s just the present, just the rolling waves and the turning of the heavens. We did the same things we do most every day: watch, eat, sleep, study, and repeat. But that’s not really what makes today special or important. It was just another day, but it was another day of being alive. Another day watching the sun turn the clouds golden, hearing the splash of the hull as we make our way westward, breathing in the fresh ocean air. That’s a reason to be grateful, I think. When everything boils down to the present moment, it’s a lot easier to appreciate the little things, to appreciate the simple things. It makes life more beautiful.
