Believe it or not, we finally caught a fish! We woke up on this fine April Fools’ Day fearful of the pranks to ensue, and instead brought a huge wahoo on board! Vittoria was head chef today (our favorite day on the job wheel) and added some delicious fish to her quinoa salad lunch. Today we journeyed over to a beautiful mooring ball in southern St. Lucia with a looming, lush mountain peak right next to us. We spent the day doing some maintenance and cleaning around Vela, finishing up oceanography and working on our final research projects, studying for our knots exam, having our first class of dinghy school, all while watching our backs for pranks and mischief. Many people were sprayed with the hose or had their coffee filters stolen, but our busy day didn’t leave too much time to fool around. For dinner, Vittoria cooked her very popular Greek dinner with homemade pita, tzatziki, hummus, chicken, and fried zucchini. In the evening, we all went our separate ways to call family, catch up on homework, or sleep, and relax after a full day.
While we all woke up anticipating April Fool’s Day, we also woke up shocked at how it was already April 1st. These past 71 days have flown by, and it’s hard to believe they’ve made it to April so quickly. Each day passes faster and faster, making us appreciate each squeeze question, small moment, vibrant sunset, all the laughs and cries together, and pushing us to make the most of our last 19 days aboard Vela. The amount we’ve grown, learned, and achieved up until this April Fools Day is certainly no joke, and as we enter our last two weeks of program, we cannot wait to take on all that waits for us on our way to Antigua (hopefully that includes more fish!).
