Location: Azores -> Gibraltar

Anticipation was high as we woke up for our last morning in the Azores. We took on a small amount of reserve fuel as the last bits of passage prep were checked off. When we were ready, the engine was started, and we began our undocking sequence. Lots of people from the marina came out to watch; it’s not every day you get to see a vessel as beautiful as Vela actually leaving the dock! Once out of the marina, Runyon went a little kookoo and jumped overboard! Don’t worry; it was all part of a drill, and Runyon was an eager volunteer. He even managed to execute a perfect lemon drop for the drill. After a successful rescue swimmer recovery, we were finally underway and bound for Gibraltar. The forecast does not seem to be the greatest for this passage, so unfortunately, we’ll have to do more motoring than we would like. The Azores were so beautiful, and I think we all would have loved to spend the whole summer there exploring all the islands, however Gibraltar is calling us and we are excited for our next adventure! The dolphins seemed to appear by the hundreds as they escorted out Sao Jorge channel, even a few whales breached off our bow to say goodbye. That’s all for today, until next time!

As usual, wishing Sam and my family could experience this with me.
