Location: Dominica
The crew woke bright and early at 6:00 am to the few random songs my Spotify hasn’t undownloaded yet, in preparation for yet another covid test as we got ready to clear out of Dominica and continue on our journey south. After a breakfast of yogurt and granola (classic) and heaps of watermelon (yay!!) we prepared for what (judging from our previous experiences ) could be a long morning of waiting to be tested. Camped out outside the hospital, many of us were buckling down on our oceanography essays due later that evening. The experience, however, proved much speedier than expected, and only 45 minutes later, after both a nose and throat swab, we were headed back to O Star. The rest of the morning, little more than the typing of keys could be heard as slowly we chugged away on our papers until lunch when we all came together for some wonderful Shakshuka. The afternoon was a patchwork of seamanship and passage prep, as we all attempted to memorize the phonetic alphabet. Again a short interval between class and passage prep was filled with the quiet sounds of typing and rising terror as the deadline drew nearer. A speedy passage prep commenced around 2:00 pm, after which one of our last ocean showers, for some time, took place because, in just a day’s time, we would be once again basking the luxury of freshwater showers. Then after dinner, the clock really started ticking, only an hour before the paper was due, and we were all crammed in the saloon typing a mile a minute. At around 9, time was up and relief settled over the boat and most prepared for an early night of sleep in anticipation of our 16-hour passage looming the following afternoon.
I think that’s it for day 26, folks!
Bye for now!
