Location: Gallows Bay, St Eustatius
It’s hard to believe, but today we went on one of our last hikes of the trip! After fueling up with an oatmeal breakfast prepared by Devi and Peyton, we headed to shore. We walked up the steep eroding cliffs and through the quiet town of Oranjestad, where we saw the more visible destruction from the hurricanes. At the edge of town, we found the trailhead to Quill National Park. We hiked up and up careful not to step on any hermit crabs along the way. Finally, we reached the rim of the giant volcanic crater. At this point, half of our group decided to return back to town for some free time, and the other half of the group continued to hike up the Mazinga Trail to the highest point of Statia. At 600 meters up, we were graced with breathtaking views of Statia. In the distance, we could see Saba, St. Kitts, and Nevis. After taking in the vistas, we returned back down to Oranjestad, where we stopped for some cold drinks before doing a little exploring of the peaceful little town. The town had narrow cobblestone roads and many historic buildings. We found ourselves at Fort Oranje, which overlooked Gallows Bay, where the S/Y Ocean Star sits. Tired from our hike, we continued down to the dock, where we found the rest of our crew waiting. Back on the Ocean Star, we had some free time before dinner that was spent showering, napping, and studying. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset while we dined on veggie curry. After dinner and clean up, we had Oceanography with Steph. It was another great day here in the Caribbean. Tomorrow we head for Saint Barts. Hopefully, it will be a nice day for sailing.
