Location: Les Saintes
Today started early for the Crew of Ocean Star. We awoke at 06:45 and made final preparations to sail away from Dominica bound for Les Saints, French Islands, about 35 nautical miles to our north. After Pancho helped us untie our stern lines from the palm trees, we hauled back both anchors and set 5 sails as we set our course for The Saints. The sail was calm, and some crewmembers went aloft to search for whales. We didn’t come across any whales, but we did spot several pods of dolphins while underway. The wind picked up once we left the shelter of Dominica, and we had a superb sail up to The Saints, finishing off by tacking our way into the cluster of small islands. The crew then set their sights on the task of putting the boat away, and after a short Boat Appreciation, Ocean Star was looking spiffy as ever. After dinner, students settled in for a couple of hours of Marine Biology, including lectures on Intertidal Seas and a Blue Planet video, the perfect end to a busy and rewarding day.
