Location: Underway to Tonga

Another beautiful day at sea! The sun came out today, the wind and the waves died down a little bit, and it’s actually been incredibly pleasant. We passed the island of Nui, the first land any of us have seen in days. It didn’t look very interesting, to be honest. Very flat, and apparently, there’s not a whole lot there. It’s Captain Sam’s birthday today! Alex made some awesome BLTs for lunch, and then Sam took over the galley to whip up some phenomenal legs of lamb with roasted broccoli, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, onions, parsnips, and pumpkin. Probably the best underway dinner we’ve had yet. For squeeze, I asked everybody what they thought Sam would be doing today if he had never started sailing. Most everybody agreed he would be some kind of mountain climber or kite surfing instructor. To top off dinner, Girl Sam and RJ put together a double-decker monster of a cake that gave everyone the biggest sugar rush of their lives, which was good because pretty much every dish on the boat had to be cleaned. Spirits were high, and the weather was good, so my team’s eight to midnight watch was a pretty good time. We had DJ Dead Girl live in the cockpit for throwback hour, playing all of your favorite nineties jams late into the night. Dancing was done; a blast was had. Tomorrow we’ll cross the second deepest trench in the world, the international dateline, and we should arrive in Tonga.
