Hello world! Today was a BLUR. But memorable nonetheless! First day back on passage, and boy, were we busy. To start off, watch team 1 spent the majority of the morning raising and trimming the main sail, both staysails, and even the jib. The wind and sea state stayed fairly consistent throughout the early afternoon while the students had oceanography and leadership class, until a few squalls decided to roll through. The timing could not have been more perfect – just as the students were making their way on deck after sweating through their lessons (no AC), we hit the heart of a big one. Winds picked up, time to bring in the main, oh now it’s raining, everyone is getting wet, oh now it’s raining sideways, squeals come from beneath the lowered sail, oh now it’s raining sideways HARD, well at last the sail is flaked…I enjoyed sitting at the helm throughout this sequence of events and observing the progression from excitement to “hide!” to acceptance. I also love the warm rain. Meanwhile, we are making our way around a B-E-A-UTIFUL volcanic island, green and luscious with steep terrain. Reminded me a lot of the big island of Hawaii. The sky decided to clear for just long enough to complete deck showers, before drizzling again pre-dinner. During this drizzle, a few of us were lucky enough to spot a smallish (1.5m?) devil ray repeatedly leap out of the water, just off of the port bow. Flips on flips on flips – I think the most I could count was 8 rotations, in one jump! Kayli said that the wind must’ve given them a boost; it was fairly impressive. And mega neat. To round off the day, during squeeze I had everyone determine their neighbour’s spirit animals. Quite amusing to hear the perceptions of one another. All in all, a grand (Satur-?)day!
