Today was our first full day on Statia. In the morning, after a quick breakfast, we dinghied to a loading dock where we started our hike up the mountain. First, we had to climb up a rough trail to town. We then walked through town, up a long hill and arrived at the base of the Quill. The Quill is a dormant volcano that formed the island. The scenery changed from a grassy landscape into a dense forest. After about forty-five minutes of hiking, we arrived at the rim. We then had the option to continue to the summit, go down into the crater, go around the mountain, or go back to town. Some returned to town early while others continued to the summit. At the summit, you could see a brilliant 360-degree view of the island. We then proceeded down the mountain into town where we went on the internet, scored some goodies from the supermarket, and then met at the much anticipated Chinese restaurant which more that lived up to our expectations. The rest of the day was spent relaxing on the boat and preparing for exams.
