Location: Underway to Cocos Keeling

Today was a full day of passage on our way to Cocos (Keeling). We’ve spent the whole day with no sighting of land, which is an amazing and eerie experience. My watch team had the 12 AM to 4 AM watch last night, so we started our day bright and early. There is something so special about looking out over the ocean at night, not another soul in sight, with an endless expanse of stars stretching out above you in the night sky. I was able to spot my trusty Orion constellation, but I still have a lot to learn about the constellations that are visible here in the Southern Hemisphere.

After being up so late/early for the watch, I appreciated the noon wake-up. Mac made us all an amazing jambalaya for lunch, and after classes, we went straight into classes. Oceanography was a fun class today- we got out all of the different lab equipment we have on board and had some fun testing the salinity and phosphate levels of the ocean water. We also had a chance to look through the microscope and do some plankton identification. Our seamanship class was next, and I really enjoyed learning more about the points of sail.

Dinner was spaghetti, accompanied by some amazing cookies that Vera baked for us. No matter how many times we do it, I will never get tired of watching the sunset as we eat. There is something so special about an ocean sunset. Now that it’s dark, we need to take down the fisherman’s sail, so I will be helping with that as soon as I am done writing this blog. We still have five of our six sails up and will be sailing through the night until we reach Cocos.

P.S. Hi family, Love and miss you- pet my dog for me
