Location: Prince Rupert Bay, Dominica

As rain fell down on our hatches, it seemed as if most people were awake before the 7 am wake-up time. The few stragglers who received some sleep-in time were up by the arrival of breakfast. A very interesting lecture was then given by Sam in oceanography. We learned about the detrimental effects of fisheries and aquaculture and how to deal with them. Lucy then gave a very captivating presentation on leadership, which was enjoyed by all. At the conclusion of the preparation of lunch, Tupperware was packed to the brim, and bags were readied for the departure of dinghy’s at 11:30 for our next adventure, whale watching. We packed motor vessel ‘stingray II’ at around 2 pm, and we ventured off into the coast of Dominica in search of sperm whales. After about 3 hours of tracking a pod, we were right on their tails when the captain bellowed, “WHALE HO,” and then the entire boat rushed to the bow. The most exciting moment came when the chanting of, “TAIL, TAIL, TAIL, TAIL,” came. Everyone saw the backs of the whales, and when they finally lifted their iconic tail out of the water, the boat went crazy. The day was concluded with a very calming late-night drive back to Portsmouth and then a delicious meal prepared by the dedicated, hardworking staff and a wonderful bonding squeeze amongst the crew. An amazing day was shared amongst everyone as, for most of us, we all shared a sighting of a beautiful new species. Being able to see these magnificent creatures in their own habitat was a gift given to most for the first time. An appreciation was felt among each of us as we witnessed the tail of Moby Dick slap down upon the water. To my own and everyone else’s family, we love and miss you very much.
