Location: Rodney Bay, St. Lucia

Welcome to day 26 with the crew of S/Y Vela,

From questionable tour guides to a smooth departure from St. Lucia, today was a delightful and diverse compilation of events. I very much enjoyed the groggy faces I encountered at 6:15 AM sharp during our early wake-up to prepare for the day’s rainforest excursion. Breakfast, prepared by Bearded Nick, consisted of some delicious buns and eggs as a special substitute for the usual cereal or yogurt bowls. By 9:00 AM, we had already begun the half-hour car ride to Jacquot Trail, where we would lather ourselves with bug deterrent and start our guided hike through the rainforest. Overall, the hike was a beautiful experience and a fantastic showcase of the natural beauty of St. Lucia. Despite the fact that our tour guide had some misguided opinions regarding gender, I believe we all enjoyed the workout and time ashore. As we made our way back to the boat in the early afternoon, many of us were exhausted and caught in a minor food coma from the brief time we had to eat and shop before the dinghies arrived.

The next order of business was passage prep, which becomes a quicker and more efficient process every time around. With Vela prepared for action, we took our ocean showers and raised anchor. Finally, a well-deserved and hearty dinner of pasta and shredded sausage, just in time for a beautiful sunset featuring the shrinking backdrop of St. Lucia. Time for me to go to sleep as I have watch at midnight and would prefer to be fully awake while crawling through the engine bay!

And special thanks to everyone that helped make this possible! I could not be more grateful, and much love from the Caribbean!
