Location: Cartagena, Spain
Watch team 2, and I started the day by going to bed after we were relieved by watch team 3 at midnight. Naturally, watch team 1 took over at 4 a.m. until my team was awoken again for the 0800-1200 watch. Cartagena, Spain, was in sight when we took the deck, and we began our preparations for a stern-in, port-side docking. Watch team 2 had the privilege of striking the Forestay sail, mainstay, and main sail. While manning the helm, we noticed a surface-level submarine exiting the very port we were about to enter! Excitement reverberated through the decks, and whoever was awake rushed onto the deck to see the vessel. While our excitement was subsiding, we prepared fenders on the port side of the boat. Our captain, then, expertly guided us into our slip, where we began our “boat to bed” procedures. After the boat was prepared for our stay, we had some time to ourselves before lunch. After lunch, we had seamanship and marine biology. We finished up the day with our squeeze and gelato in the beautiful Cartagena. We did not expect to leave Mallorca early, but we adjusted our sails, and we’ve been having a great time, nevertheless.
