Location: Savusavu, Fiji
Today we woke up to another rainy but beautiful morning in Fiji. For breakfast, we had scrambled eggs and Fijian toast from one of the local pastry shops– so good. Following breakfast, we had Marine Biology class, then got ready for land time, as we got the chance to explore the town of Savusavu today. After getting dropped off on the dock, we met some of the staff at the local fruit market to help with some grocery shopping. We then found a restaurant called the Snowy Dessert Cafe that had amazing smoothies, cake, coffee, and pancakes.
One of the highlights from today was getting to sit in the mineral baths (see the picture of Griffin). The water comes from the volcanic hot spots on the island but isn’t nearly as hot as the actual hot springs that run into the ocean. Griffin, Taylor, Meg, and I went on a spontaneous hike up a very large hill that we spotted from town. As we were halfway up in our flip-flops, we realized that it was a bit steeper and muddier than we had planned on, but the view was worth it. As we made our way back down the mountain, Taylor slipped a few times and eventually took Griffin down with her. Zoe and Evan also went on a mid-island hike to the top of an island, and we’re fortunate enough to hitch a ride in the back of a local man’s pick-up truck. After getting back and taking ocean showers, we ate risotto and baked potatoes for dinner made by our amazing chefs, Olivia, Steve, and Mike. Now we are ending the day with some night dives and hot chocolate (since the water is a little colder than French Polynesia)!
