Location: Saba
Today was passage to Saba from Statia! The passage was not long: we set sail after breakfast cleanup and arrived late afternoon today. Everyone worked well together and helped each other when setting up the sail. It went very smoothly (mostly). We broke the tack ring of the sail, but everyone managed really well to handle it, and we successfully set sail soon after that hurdle.
Passage was short, but it was periodically rocky and windy, where we had to adapt (as shown in the photo of Elling and Kat). Many went to take a good nap during passage, and some remained on deck, and we had good conversations (before going to nap a bit too).
Saba looks like a really cool island, and everyone’s excited to go ashore tomorrow. One of the pictures is “the ladder,” where we will go ashore tomorrow morning with an allegedly very wet entry followed by a steep hike.
There are boats of another similar study abroad program (one of them shouted to us that she has been on Ocean Star before, too!) anchored nearby, and we overheard from the radio that they were looking for a spare large pot for cooking their dinner that night. We volunteered one of our pots for them to borrow, where Q waved the pot over his head towards their boats — that was very funny.
In our anchored time, we played cards (President, Kat taught us Black Balls, etc.), did group showers, and all had a great time. Our chefs — Aiden, Kassy, and Elling — had to make pita bread on their own for dinner tonight. It was not something they’ve ever done before, and although they didn’t really look like pita bread, they were very good, and everyone loved it!
My question for the day was, “your favorite food from home.” Everyone shared food their family made, childhood favorites, and/or different cuisine that they enjoyed.
