Location: Las Palmas, Canary Islands
There is nothing that compares to waking up at 6 in the morning to a sky splattered with stars and watching it change into an incredible sunrise over the Atlantic. This was our beginning to another beautiful day aboard Argo. We rolled into Las Palmas at about 10 am with just our forward staysail up, as the winds had died down and we had to motor. After clearing customs quite smoothly, as compared to Morocco, we set forth in washing and scrubbing the salt and rust off the deck after a surprisingly salty passage. It was clear that all the rust busting we had done the day before reappeared overnight with the large rolling waves. We then had our OCCasey (Marine Biology) exam where we needed to make sure that we knew the Finding Nemo song, Hydrozoa, Scyphozoa, Anthozoa, Cubozoa, all the cnidarians of the deep blue sea! Those are all the orders of jellyfish, in case you were wondering. We were then given leave to explore Las Palmas and most people spent time on their private provisioning, stocking up on snacks before the crossing. Life on Argo is so incredibly different everyday that sometimes it is hard to keep up and I know that I am doing my best to enjoy every moment of these beautifully sunny days as we sail around the Atlantic. However I must say that all this sunshine is making me soft and my Vermont family will laugh when I tell them I think anything below 65F is cold! I hope life on shore is treating everyone as well as life aboard is and we can all appreciate the simplest things, like dangling our feet off the chart house during watch or getting to wake up for three hours in the middle of the night to hang out with some of your favorite people aboard.
