Location: Underway

While we’re underway, the day starts at different times depending on your watch schedule, but for watch team two (myself, Amy, Audrey, Liam, Elis, Dan, Lukas, Lillian, and Emma), the day started at 8 am. After breakfasts of cereal and oatmeal, my watch team was thrilled to hear that we would be doing a deck wash and making good use of some of our freshly made water. A couple of hours in to watch, we saw land on the horizon, just not the land that we were going to. We’re coming around the Cape Verde islands before we start to head west towards the Caribbean. We’ve had some really nice sailing over the last few days, but around 11 am, the wind that had been steadily pushing us south began to die, so we dropped the flying jib and main sail to begin motoring. For lunch, Elis and her sous chefs, Luke and Eduardo, made some grilled cheeses and a corn salad, which we ate under the shade of our mini tarp. Post lunch, everyone had leadership (taught by Smash), followed by seamanship (taught by Mac and I). When they were done with class, Elis and her galley team were hard at work making a dinner of meatballs, mashed potatoes, and zucchini. All in all, it was another great day on Vela, and we’re excited to start heading west soon!
