Location: Roseau to Portsmouth, Dominica
The day started with some yoga to loosen up those sore muscles that we mistreated badly two days ago during the Boiling Lake hike. After the morning exercise and breakfast, we were ready for quite a load of Oceanography class. We had a date with an evening quiz on Physical Oceanography, which asked for a long review class in the morning. Once done with class and after playing the obligatory Tetris in the galley to find space for all the provisions Monika and Cayley had bought for us, we made our way to a different part of Dominica, namely Portsmouth, a quiet little town at Prince Rupert Bay. Here there was time for studying, either onshore or onboard, as well as for one of the first practices on backflips. Some went also for a dinghy ride to enjoy some boat watching and also to gather some nice pictures of beautiful Ocean Star that one of our harbor neighbors had taken a few days before while we were underway with all the sails up. For dinner, there was brain food: Self-made pizza, thanks to our head chef of the day, Tucker, and brownies, thanks to Dana. Hopefully, that helped with the quiz, which was scheduled for shortly after. In addition, we had an introduction to the characteristics of estuaries since tomorrow we will be touring the Indian River, a great opportunity for observing the dynamics of the confluence between sea and land waters.
PS: Physical joke of the day:
Einstein, Newton, and Pascal are playing hide and go seek. It’s Einstein’s turn to count, so he covers his eyes and starts counting to ten. Pascal runs off and hides. Newton draws one meter by one meter square on the ground in front of Einstein and stands in the middle of it. Einstein reaches ten, uncovers his eyes, obviously sees Newton immediately and exclaims: “Newton! I found you! You’re it!”. Newton smiles and says: “You didn’t find me. You found a Newton over a square meter. You found Pascal!”.
